Local SEO for Bismarck contractors

Three results show in the map pack. Everything under them is fighting over what’s left. Local SEO is the work of getting you into those three for the searches that turn into paid jobs.

The map pack

Three results. That’s the whole shelf.

The short version

The map pack is the whole game.

When somebody in Bismarck searches for a contractor on a phone, the map fills most of the screen. Three businesses get shown. Most people never scroll past them, and a large share never scroll at all. Everything below is competing for the leftovers.

Google decides those three on relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot move your shop, so the work is on the other two: making it unmistakable what you do and where, and making your business look like the established, reviewed, referenced choice.

The good news is that this market is winnable in a way that a big metro is not.

A roofer in Raleigh is fighting two hundred competitors, most of them with budgets. Here you may be fighting a dozen, several of whom have not updated a Google profile since 2019. The amount of work required to get to the top of a Bismarck map pack is a fraction of what it costs in a large market — and once you are there it is hard for anyone to take it from you.

Included in every engagement

  • Keyword and competitor research focused on the job types that make you money
  • Google Business Profile rebuild: categories, services, service area, photos, posts
  • A page for every service you sell, written properly rather than spun from a template
  • City pages for Bismarck, Mandan and Lincoln, each written for how that town searches
  • Technical SEO: site speed, indexation, internal linking, crawl issues
  • LocalBusiness and Service schema markup so Google understands what you are
  • Citation building and NAP cleanup so your name, address and phone match everywhere

What gets done

Everything that goes into a local SEO engagement

No single item on this list wins on its own. The compounding comes from doing all of them, consistently, for longer than your competitor is willing to.

  • Local link building: suppliers, trade associations, the chamber, sponsorships, local press
  • Review velocity, because reviews are a ranking factor and not just social proof
  • AI search visibility work so you get named by ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews
  • Grid rank tracking, where you rank across the whole metro, not one number from one spot
  • Monthly reporting with a video walkthrough, not a PDF nobody reads

How it runs

The order matters more than the list

Weeks 1–2

Research

Which job types pay, who is ranking for them, and what those competitors have that you do not. This is where the free audit came from, expanded.

Weeks 2–4

Foundation

Profile rebuilt, site structure fixed, tracking installed, schema in place. The unglamorous part that everything else stands on.

Months 2–3

Content & authority

Service pages, city pages, citations, first links, review engine running. This is when movement starts showing up.

Ongoing

Compounding

More pages, more links, more reviews, and defending what you have won. Local SEO is not a project you finish.

Here specifically

Bismarck, Mandan and Lincoln are three different searches.

Out-of-state agencies treat this metro as one market called “Bismarck.” It is not. Somebody in Mandan searching for a plumber gets a different map than somebody in north Bismarck, because Google weighs distance heavily and the river is a real dividing line in how people here think about who is “local.”

If your shop is in Bismarck, you are at a structural disadvantage for Mandan searches and there is nothing you can do about the distance part. What you can do is win so decisively on relevance and prominence that you show up anyway — which means dedicated pages, real service-area configuration, and reviews that mention Mandan by name.

Timing matters too. The right time to build content for a trade that works outside is November through February, so the pages have three months of age on them before the season starts. Most contractors do the opposite and start marketing the week they get busy.

Where this applies

Bismarck, Mandan and Lincoln search differently and rank differently. Each gets its own page and its own plan.

Straight answers

Common questions

How long before I see results?

Ads produce calls in month one. Local SEO usually shows measurable map movement between day 45 and day 90 in a market this size, and keeps improving from there. In a bigger metro it would take longer. Anybody promising rankings in two weeks is either lying or planning to do something that gets your listing suspended.

Do you guarantee a #1 ranking?

No, and neither can anyone else. Google does not sell that and does not accept payment for it. What I guarantee is the work: the deliverables ship on the dates in your plan, or you do not pay for the following month.

What is grid rank tracking?

Your map ranking is different depending on where the person searching is standing. A single “you rank #3” number is close to meaningless. Grid tracking checks your position from dozens of points across the metro, so you can see that you own north Bismarck and are invisible in Mandan, which tells us what to work on.

Do you use AI to write the content?

I use it the way you use a nail gun, it speeds up the work, it does not decide what to build. Every page gets written around things that are true about your business: your service area, your job types, your process, your photos. Pages that are obviously mass-generated do not rank well anymore and they read badly to the homeowner, which is the part that matters.

What about Angi, Thumbtack and Nextdoor?

They can produce leads, and they are also the reason a lot of contractors feel like they are renting their business. The leads are shared, the cost per lead climbs, and none of it builds an asset you keep. Local SEO is slower and the traffic is yours. Most contractors here should be doing both, and gradually shifting the ratio.
